Christmas Tradition #7

Christmas Tradition #7

I read about this tradition a few years ago in my local newspaper and tried it. I've done it every year for about 3 years now and love to see the waitresses' reaction!

On Christmas Eve (or another night during the week of Christmas) we go out to look at all the Christmas lights around our neighborhood. All of the oooing and awwwing creates quite an appetite, so we stop at Sonic for a quick refreshment. When the waitress brings us our order, we give her a generous $20 tip and wish her a 'Merry Christmas'! One year this made the waitress cry and she told me she still had toys in lay-a-way at a store for her children. She wasn't sure how she would pay for the remainder of her bill. It made me feel so good to know that I had helped in some small way. And, I love the thought of helping someone who is willing to work on Christmas Eve!

I was behind the camera this year because I was so sick I didn't want my appearance to be recorded in any way! I've been fighting a cold/cough/flu all week and have been really sick. I always get sick at the worst possible times (when 15 people are coming for Thanksgiving dinner, when you have to get the fall decor up and Christmas down, etc.) It's been a hard week, but hopefully I'm on the up swing! We have so much decorating to finish, but when we do I'll post some pictures!

Christmas Tradition #6

Christmas Tradition #6
Every year I always enjoy shopping at our local 'Christmas Village' which is a huge craft/specialty item/Christmas item sale. It really gets you in the Christmas spirit. I look around the area for other seasonal sales that are as festive also. Usually you can find more unique gifts at these types of places.

Christmas Tradition #5

Christmas Tradition #5

One thing that I have consistently done every year for about 12 years is to write a Christmas letter telling friends and family members about my year. I started this because I would receive letters from friends and families that I enjoyed so much. Each year I would look forward to hearing what they had been up to. When I began my 'Christmas Letters' I was still in college. I've compiled each letter into a scrapbook and it's so interesting to look back on my letters from years past to see what God has taught me or how he's brought me through a situation. I also usually mail a picture with the letter. In years past it would be a picture of me and my class at school, now it is usually a picture of me with Maddie and Eddie of course! I'm working on my letter for this year right now! I better get busy writing...

Christmas Tradition #4

Christmas Tradition #4

Shopping

Of course I had to include shopping on 'Black Friday' as tradition #4! Although I typically do not get into the crowds on Black Friday, I try to stay home and decorate. My goal each year is to have most all of my shopping completed well before Christmas. I try my best to stick with a budget and list. I think Christmas is way too commercialized and I really hope not to go crazy with the gifts and the 'Santa' thing when Molly actually gets here. This year for Eddie and Maddie I have bought them one present each (that's OK, right?)...I got her a monogrammed easel and him a little toddle toy.

I've heard of families setting a limit of 3 gifts per kid, or other such restrictions so as to not go too crazy just because it's Christmas. I don't know if I will be that stringent, but I do think it's good to keep things in perspective!

Christmas Tradition #3

I first discovered the Elf on the Shelf a year ago at a local Holiday Craft sale and thought it was the cutest idea! Basically you start a Christmas tradition for your family by reading the book which introduces the elf as 'Santa's helper' who will be reporting back to Santa each night while the kids are sleeping to see if they've been good or bad. The family can name the elf and make up your own rules. Each morning whent the kids wake up they have to 'find' the elf in a new location. Such a cute idea!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here's wishing you and your family a very wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
