the day we came home, may 13, 2010

i was so ready to get home on this day
we left Guangzhou, china on a bus with the entire travel group and drove about 4 hours to hong kong
hong kong is like a totally different county, so upon entering we had to unload all of our luggage and go through customs {again}then reload the bus and travel on to the hotel a few more minutes away
although it was late at night, i could tell hong kong was a beautiful place and much different than the other cities we had been to in china
very americanized
the hotel was the nicest we had been at so far...but we were only there for about 8 hours! ha!

the bus ride was a little frantic for all of the little ones on board
about 30 kids plus parents and other family members
all trying to sooth each other
everyone was stressed to the max!
eddie put on his music loudly and blocked everyone out for a few hours
i think all the other men with wives and children on the bus were a bit jealous for minute!
but as you can see below, ms. molly was a trooper and slept most of the way
don't worry though, because this WAS NOT a sign of what would come the next day!!
the next morning we were up early to catch our first flight from hong kong to japan
then the connecting flight from japan to st. paul, Minnesota
and then on to Nashville
all together, a 20 hour travel day
the longest flight from Japan to Minnesota was not good
probably the most miserable feeling of my life!
we were stuck in the 2 middle seats in the middle row with eddie sitting behind us
it was so cramped and crowded and molly was not happy
she had good moments and slept a little bit
but in between she would want to walk around and there was no place to walk!
she would crawl under the seat in front of me and lay down and i couldn't get her
she was wanting to stretch out, so i guess the floor under a seat was the best she could do
i was worried that someone would kick her or that she would suffocate
then she got into an eating craze at the end of the flight and ate an assortment of foods
a few minutes later she vomited it all up!
we were sitting between two men on each side and i know they were hating the flight as much as us! ha!
sometimes she would turn around and stand in her seat to play with eddie and started to throw things at him
finally she took a hard toy and threw back her arm and pelted a lady that was sleeping beside eddie right in the forhead
i was so mortified!  the lady woke up startled and held her head
i tried to apologize for my child's behavior, but i know she was cursing us in her head!
we turned around and i think eddie tried to tell her that he didn't know us!!!!!!!!!!

Finally on Thursday night, May 13 we arrived home in Nashville
I had packed her special USA smocked dress in our carry on bag and we went to make a quick change
and then we were welcomed home with the most amazing crowd of family and friends!
It was SO GOOD to see familiar faces and to be home!
Molly became an American Citizen on May 13, 2010
and she received an American flag that was flown over the US Capital building on this same day so she would always remember!

love the picture of all the kiddos at the airport waiting to greet us!

doesn't molly look confused and dazed?

we went on to my house to eat and party
in the back of my head i was looking forward to this night for the entire trip!  i knew we would have good food and cold drinks with ice!  and thanks to my family and neighbors it was really fantastic!

molly walked into our house and has been happy ever since
it was just like she knew she was home!
she loved her rocking horse and went straight to it
and finally, a perfect ending to the trip of our lifetime!
thanks for letting me relive our journey to china again this year and for all the sweet comments here and on facebook!
it's been the best year and the best experience of my life and i know we are just beginning!
molly is such a precious gift from God and i'm forever grateful to be her mom!

looking back at the final days in china...

i'm almost done with my trip down memory lane for this first year anniversary of the trip of my lifetime!
these are the final days while in china

we went to this japanese restaraunt inside our hotel
still craving for something reminiscent of home
and this was pretty good
molly chowed down eating everything they cooked for us...veggies, rice, pieces of steak
but, she did not continue with that adventurous eating once we got home
she is a good eater of a few things
and unfortunately, fruit and veggies are not on her radar
we are going to work on that this summer though

she was really interested in these bubbles the whole trip

i've mentioned before about eddie's eating habits...he is on the same feeding schedule as a newborn
about every 2 hours, he's ready for a meal or snack or protein shake
by this point in the trip he had made a good routine of "packing" food from the breakfast buffet for his snacks later on
bananas, apples, and bread for pb&j's in the room
molly quickly learned his routine and would stand or sit beside him until he shared
he's not typically one to share food...but i think he shared with her! ha!
outside lucy's, an american diner
we ate there a few times:)

molly had fun on an outdoor playground near the restaurant and shopping area one night
the entire travel group :)
really amazing families and children here and i wish i had more time to talk and visit with them

molly and i went to this pizza hut close to the hotel a couple times
they had several pasta dishes as well as pizza and was a quick easy meal with a toddler

i have one more post coming to finish out memory lane
we came home on may 13th!  what a wonderful day that was...

a look back, week 2

this was our last day in molly's province of jiangxi, china
we made a quick stop to mcdonalds for lunch and then went to the airport to fly to our last city, guangzhou, china
we were really excited to be in a new environment
Guangzhou is very Americanized and very much catered to adoptive families because all adoptive famlilies have to travel through there for the medical testing and the american consulate is located there as well

at this point molly was beginning to show some personality and open up a bit
she was very attached to me which was a great thing
it was physically hard for me to get used to tugging around a 25ish pound toddler everywhere, but we managed!
as you can see below...she was permenatley attached to me even throughout nap times and night times as well
as you can well imagine, this promoted  attachment even more! ha!
i would to wait until she was fast asleep and then try to gingerly roll her over onto the bed and she would wake up and scream and cry until i picked her up again
we would go through this to see who wore out first...molly or mommy?
sometimes she would get herself so worked up and would be so hot i would rub a cool cloth on her neck which must have soothed her a bit!

were were in the airport awaiting our flight here
i wanted to wear our orange and white (go vols!) attire as we arrived to meet up with all the other families
of course many of the dads loved this and said...wow, you aren't wasting any time in dousing her in orange and white!! ha!

as you can tell from many of the pictures, she was always eating and munching on snacks
this seemed to bring her comfort and she was also experimenting because most of her diet consisted of hot milk and congee (sort of like porridge)
she was unfamiliar with eating hard/crunchy things like cereal and cookies, even at 18 months old.

at this point my back was about to give out on me from holding her so much!  she would not go to eddie to give me any relief and forget about a stroller!  so on this afternoon i had to resort to carrying her on my shoulders a bit and it was SO FUNNY because she would crouch down far enough so her face was right next to mine!
another UT outfit...
as we walked through the shopping and park area of guangzhou, we saw many brides and grooms getting their pictures taken, this was just a regular week day so i'm not sure if it was just a photo session or the actual wedding day
but, i thought the brides were so pretty!

for a moment i thought about molly in her wedding dress and then i told her she couldn't get married until i got married! ha!!  should be a while...
eating at lucy's, a famous "american" cafe on shaiman island
we were craving this so bad and i had heard from other adoptive families this would be comforting
i had a hamburger and fries and eddie had a steak and baked potato...almost like logan's!
the best part of the trip...shopping!
although this was really a lot harder than i had planned because again...she wouldn't sit in the stroller
so, that makes shopping trips less fun!  i still managed to get her a few pair of adorable squeky shoes
she can no longer fit into:(
but i kept a couple pair to show her one day
the big deal about these shoes is they are real leather, naturally are a "wide" fit, and are only about $3/pair!
and, of course the squeakers!
eddie played ball with her a lot to give me a break!

and at the end of the week we had a traditional chinese meal with all of our travel group
we had approximately 25 families traveling at the same time, so it was a big group
i only got pictures of a few of the families with their beautiful children
